Controller Support, Custom Keyboard Controls, Minimap, and Weapon Wheel

Information

First off, this isn't the Alpha 1.4 update, so there is no download, just information and images showcasing what's new. If you're waiting for Alpha 1.4 then that should be out in a few hours to a few days. This new devlog showcases (as the title suggests) a minimap, a weapon wheel, custom keyboard mappings in the pause options menu, and many more smaller things (like new gun sprites and another folder in games file directory)

Controller Support

The Roamers now has (what should be) full controller support. This has only been tested with an Xbox One controller so it might not work with all of them. The in game controls menu (activate by pressing 1 or numpad1, or Y button, or whatever keybind you have it to) tells you what controls what. But just in case that, for some reason, doesn't work for you (it should), I've taken the time to list them here.

  • Move - Left Joystick
  • Look - Right Joystick
  • A - Continue Story
  • B - Hold B and Hit LB and RB to Zoom
  • X - Reload / Action Button
  • Y - Display Controls
  • Dpad Up - Weapon Cycle Up
  • Dpad Down - Weapon Cycle Down
  • Dpad Right - Toggle Flashlight
  • Dpad Down - Toggle Hud
  • RT - Shoot Gun
  • L3 - Sprint (This will be edited as you have to hold it at the moment)
  • Back - Cycle Input Device (Between Controller and Keyboard / Mouse)
  • Start - Pause Game

Some things don't work correctly yet (Like sprinting and navigation the pause menu) but things like navigating the Main Menu and all the gameplay controls work very well. The movement is more precise with a controller yet aiming is more difficult and vice versa for the Keyboard / Mouse.

Custom Keyboard Controls

This was a big addition to The Roamers and as well as looking good and working well, it took forever (very tedious work for this). The menu lets you click what keyboard control you would like to edit, then upon choosing it puts you into edit mode. After you're in edit mode whatever key you press will get mapped to that keyboard setting. So if you'd rather play with the Arrow Keys instead of the WASD Keys, you can do that. One limitation I ran into was mouse control settings, those are locked in. There are a Save and a Reset button on the right side of the Controls Menu, if you don't save the keybinds will still work, but when you exit the game these settings will be erased. Reset resets the keybinds to default. Here's an image of what that looks like right now.

Minimap

A minimap is now displayed on the bottom right of the UI while outside, this minimap doesn't display indoors for obvious reasons. If I make a room where the inside is big I'll add the minimap for that room and vice versa. The minimap has two settings, locked north and rotate freely. Here's an image displaying the new minimap while its rotation is locked north.

You can also see the new AR (AK47) top view and side view, the two other weapons have new top and side views, along with the fist having a new side view. As far as the animations go, I've made no progress, if anyones interested in joining our team and working with us on The Roamers by doing 2D Top Down Character Animations and Game Assets feel free to comment on this post or go here for more details and some contact info on the Help Wanted post.

Weapon Wheel

The last thing on this devlog is the new weapon wheel, it shows the 4 weapon choices you have and lets you pick from them. Un equipped weapons will be grayed out and are unselectable. Hold the Q Key and move your mouse around the center of the game screen to cycle through weapons. Here's an image of what that looks like.

Thanks for taking the time to read this. I'll try and keep devlogs more frequent. Story is almost here, I need to hurry up with the development so people can actually enjoy playing this game, it's mainly up at the moment for alpha testing, recommendations, feedback, and as a sort of portfolio so I can create a dev team of people who want to work on this project. Donations and feedback is always appreciated, thanks ~ DawsonY8s
